STOP PRESS! MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR POWES PARKOP
Date: 7th December 2016 Time: 3pm
I am totally horrified sickened and embarrassed but more disgusted by our failure to do anything about this sick behavior for the last four years. We have done absolutely nothing at the National level to curb this madness and crime against women of our country. We are trying our best in the the City but we just lack leadership at National level. We have adopted our strategic plan to deal with gender based violence for the City, we have set up the Secretariat to work with Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee to deliver the strategy and we have launched various programs aimed at changing behaviour and culture of violence like Sanap Wantaim campaign. In the meantime the National Strategy against Gender Based Violence which UNDP in partnership with so many stakeholders developed is languishing in the Department for Community Development. It has not gone to Cabinet for approval. And that Department is lead by a female Minister and female Secretary. How pathetic. While women of our country are getting maimed, tortured and murdered just for being women, those who have power to make a difference are just indifferent. The attack on this innocent women is sickening but it’s equally sickening that those who can make a difference are doing nothing or plain indifferent. How many more women must suffer, be tortured, maimed, necklaced by burning tyres, be mutilated before we can be compelled to take action. Let us all protest this sick attack but let us also compelled the Minister and her Secretary to take action. Can we organise a massive public rally and march on the street of Port Moresby on the 10th of December Human Rights Day or march to Department of Community Developemnt to wake them up. I will give the green light to such a march or occupation of the street as Governor and Chairman of Peace and Good Order Committee
Hon. Gov Powes Parkop
