TROPICAL CYCLONES EXPECTED IN 2017
Coastal areas in Papua New Guinea are warned on tropical cyclone season looming in January of 2017.
Only days away from new year, the National Weather Service have issued a strong warning to the general population living in coastal areas of the country to be mindful when going out to sea. The office for weather service in the country said according to their records there was a strong forecast on extreme wind surges and formation of cyclones expected in the first few months of 2017.
Vulnerable areas in the country include Milne Bay, Oro, Central, Gulf and parts of Western.
Due to the extreme wet season expected in January and February, floods were also anticipated from continuous rainfall throughout the coastal areas of Southern region in the country.
People have been cautioned to be alert and avoid activities in disaster prone areas of the country.
