Inductions for Parliamentarians This Week

Parliament will be rife with activity this week starting today with a weeklong induction program for members of Parliament in the lead up to the opening of the 10th Parliament.
Members will be briefed on protocol, etiquette, rules, regulations and procedures of Parliament by the Parliamentary Services led by Clerk, Mr Kala Aufa as well as other functions of State by selected State agencies.
Speaker Mr Job Pomat will also address members at the State Function room.
The Ombudsman Commission is billed this morning to introduce the duties and responsibilities as provided for under the Leadership Code while the Auditor General will run new members through the need for accountability in the use of public funds.
The Constitution, Law & Reform Commission and the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission will also address members on the roles of their respective agencies.
The Chief Secretary will lead departments to brief members on Tuesday including Internal Revenue commission, National Economic and Fiscal Commission and National Executive Council.
Members will tour the LNG Processing site on Thursday.
During the week selected companies and departments will put up stalls within Parliament precincts to make available to Members and visitors their wares.
The Official Opening of the 10th Parliament will proceed at 10am on Tuesday, August 22.
Order of proceedings on Tuesday will include a Guard of Honor from the 1st Royal Pacific Island Regiment and the combined Police and Correctional Services band.
After various dignitaries arrive and are escorted to their respected places the Governor General will take his position on the dais for the royal salute and the band will play God save the Queen after which there will be a 19 gun salute followed by the National Anthem which will be sung by students from Ted Diro Primary School.
Members will then enter Parliament and take their seats. The Speaker will seek the concurrence of all members to admit the Chief Justice and other judges into the chamber and having received an “Ayes” vote will do so.
The Governor General will be admitted next where he will take the Speaker’s chair and address the Parliament before declaring the 10th Parliament open.
After the official opening Members and guests will retire to the State Function room for refreshments. There will be some singsing groups on site to bring color to the event.
