Ministers to Address Land and Housing Issues

It was a give-and-take commitment for development of Port Moresby for Housing Minister and Moresby Northeast MP John Kaupa and Lands and Physical Planning Minister and Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko.

The two leaders vowed last Friday to use their new ministerial positions to address housing and land issues in the city. Mr Kaupa said he would give ownership of National Housing Corporation houses back to the tenants in Moresby South electorate who have occupied and developed these properties at their own cost for decades. In return he wanted Mr Tkatchenko to address land issues particularly the conversion of settlements to suburbs in Moresby Northeast electorate, a request Mr Tkatchenko said he was willing to address.

Both leaders also said they would together with Moresby Northwest MP Sir Mekere Morauta and NCD Governor Powes Parkop to ensure that everyone in the city benefited from their plans.

“It‘s about working together as a team; it wasn’t done properly in the past five years and I look forward to working with Sir Mekere and also with John Kaupa to ensure that we see development come on both sides from health, education and also with land issues and the bonuses now having John Kaupa as the Minister for Housing as it works perfectly together,” Mr Tkatchenko said.

This point was also reiterated by Mr Kaupa.

“Team work is very important. Whatever national politics and issues that we might have in affiliation of party let’s put them aside,” Mr Kaupa said.
